Sérgio Silva Completes ONWARD Short-Term Scientific Mission

Dr Sérgio Silva from REQUIMTE, University of Porto, Porto, Portugal, recently participated in a Short-Term Scientific Mission (STSM) of the ONWARD project, gaining valuable scientific and professional experience while contributing to collaborative European research efforts.

Reflecting on his participation, Silva described the opportunity as both “extremely valuable scientifically and personally,” highlighting the programme’s role in fostering collaboration and skill development among researchers.

Advancing Environmental Virus Surveillance

Motivated by the opportunity to engage with experts in environmental virology, Silva applied to the STSM to strengthen collaboration within the COST Action network and gain hands-on laboratory experience. His mission focused on supporting the environmental surveillance of hepeviruses in bivalve molluscs from the Iberian Peninsula.

During his stay, he worked closely with the host laboratory to apply harmonised molecular detection methods, contributing data to broader European monitoring initiatives. This work plays an important role in understanding viral circulation in environmental and food-related contexts.

Hands-On Learning and Scientific Exchange

The mission provided Silva with practical experience in key laboratory workflows, including sample processing, viral RNA extraction, and molecular detection using RT-qPCR. Beyond technical training, the exchange of ideas with the host team proved equally valuable.

He noted that discussions on data interpretation, environmental virology strategies, and genomic characterisation approaches significantly enriched his understanding of the field.

Strengthening Future Research

According to Silva, the experience has already had a meaningful impact on his research trajectory. It enhanced his technical expertise and expanded his international network, while the data generated during the mission will support future work on the genetic characterisation of detected viruses.

In particular, upcoming research will explore sequencing approaches to better understand the diversity of hepeviruses present in environmental samples.

A Valuable Programme for Early-Career Researchers

Silva praised the ONWARD STSM programme as an “excellent initiative” that promotes collaboration, knowledge exchange, and capacity building across Europe. He emphasized its importance in providing early-career researchers with opportunities to develop skills, establish partnerships, and contribute to coordinated scientific efforts.
